History
The National Capital Interest Group (“NCIG”) was formed in 2000, during the 2000 presidential campaign. Sorors were initially attracted to the NCIG because a majority of its members worked in public policy either on political campaigns, with advocacy organizations, or as federal employees.
The National Capital Interest Group coalesced over two years. During that period, the NCIG participated in mentoring and service projects throughout the Greater Washington, D.C. area. The NCIG provided volunteer and logistics support during the Alpha Kappa Alpha Public Policy Conferences held in 2000 and 2001, in conjunction with the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference.
Falls Church, Virginia, was ultimately selected as the site of the new chapter. The city was without a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and was well suited in its proximity to Washington, D.C. In support of the community, in 2001, the NCIG initiated a relationship providing support to the Falls Church Volunteers of America shelter for homeless persons.
On April 18, 2002, a long held dream became a reality when sixteen Sorors chartered the Chi Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., thereby creating a framework for our chapter to promote its national and international goals. The chapter was chartered in the Mid-Atlantic Region under the supervision of Regional Director Clara M. Hines. Our chapter's Charter Members were: Sorors Averyl Bailey, Karen Bloom, Michelle "Shelly" Millaud Chambliss, Daphne Tippens Chisolm, Peggy L. Fields, Monique P. Frazier, Jane Hamilton, La Tanya Renee Harry, Sheila Yvonne Harvey, Michelle D. James, Nakia P. Kelly, Jocelyn M. Moore, Cindy Nneka Ragin, Edlecia Sherrod, Tina M. Tucker, and Patrice Willoughby.
